World Blood Donor Day – 14th June 2019

World Blood Donor Day – 14th June 2019

  • Of all people in the population eligible to give blood, only 10% choose to do so.
  • In the United States alone, someone needs blood on average every 2 seconds.
  • 400 new donors per day are needed to meet demand.
  • 135,000 new donors are needed per year, simply to replace those who can no longer donate.
  • More O negative donors are needed. 13% of the donor population is O negative, compared to 35% of donors who have O positive blood.
  • O negative blood is viewed as the ‘universal blood type’ and so is used in emergencies as any blood type can receive it.
