World Mental Health Day 2023

World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on 10th October. The theme for this year, 2023 – set by the World Foundation of Mental Health is ‘Mental health is a universal human right’.

World Mental Health day is a chance to talk about mental health, how we need to look after it and how to ask for help if you are struggling. As well as raising awareness and creating a positive change towards mental health.

BDHL have put together 7 top tips for staying mentally healthy at work

  1. Have a lunch break – most jobs have a set time for a lunch break written into a contract. Take it and enjoy it! Having a break will give you time to relax, regroup, eat and drink something and mean your afternoon is more productive as you have reenergised.
  2. When possible go outside whilst working – enjoy your lunch break outside or go for a walk or enjoy a group activity outside with colleagues.
  3. Take up a challenge – do a sponsored walk or event. Keeping active and being outside and part of a team gives a sense of communal achievement.
  4. If you are feeling stressed at work listen to music to help you unwind and refocus and blockout the noise around you.
  5. A work life balance is so important for your health, have clear boundaries between work and home and try to stick to them to ensure you can fully enjoy both.
  6. Start and end each day with a To-Do list – there is nothing more satisfying than ticking jobs off a list and the feeling of accomplishment.
  7. Ask for help – if you feel your workload is becoming unmanageable then speak to your managers to create a plan to resolve it. Your company may also have in place an employee benefits such as a private medical insurance policy with an employee assistance programme that means you can speak to a professional councellor for advice any day or night.
